What Causes Purple Bruise, Swelling And Pain While On Splint For Broken Finger?

I broke the tip of my pinky about 4 months ago. Went to the doctor, wore a splint on it for 6 or 8 weeks with a checkup around week 5 and they said it was healing fine. It is still slightly darker and more swollen than the other pinky, but not alarmingly so, and only hurts a little if I try to make a tight fist. BUT, about a week ago, the knuckle on that same finger, which hadn't given me any trouble before, started hurting a little. It also developed a purple bruise that seems to be better some days and worse others, although the pain is almost totally gone. Is the bruise related to the original break, and should I be worried about it?
