What Causes Puffiness In The Eyelids With Swelling In The Throat?

I just recently started having unusual symptoms. First under my left eyelid became puffy. Then my throat/ tonsils/ glands swoll up and I have a cold sore on my lip. I have a n extremely bad migraine and even with medicine, it seems the same. It seems like all of my symptoms Are on the left side of my face. What do you think I have?

Hi. You do have unusual symptoms but they are not very uncommon. The unilateral eyelid puffiness with associated unilateral headache ?migraine might point towards localised left sided ethmoidal or frontal sinusitis. The infected mucous from these sinuses can trickle down into the back of your throat and start a tonsillar infection. The cold sore on the lip may be an isolated finding or may have formed due to vitamin deficiency (Vit B12/ Vit C).

Localised sinusitis may not respond to just oral medications. It will require clinical workup and targeted management. I would recommend seeing an ENT physician while you are having these symptoms. It will be easy to identify the condition by a simple X Ray of the paranasal sinuses or a CT if necessary. A nasal endoscopy may also be indicated. If the sinusitis is confirmed a stronger course of antibiotics along with mucolytics, saline irrigation and anti-inflammatory medications may help in managing both the sinusitis and the tonsillar infection. Oral antiseptic/betadine gargles before and after meals for 5 days will be an addition for the tonsillitis.

Unilateral eyelid puffiness may still be due to other systemic conditions or orbital pathologies. They may be ruled out if you test negative for sinusitis which is a lot more likely to be the cause with the given symptoms.

Do let me know how this progresses and would like to follow up with the care.
