What Causes Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding?

I have had my period for four months straight. It started in mid August. I have no cramps or other period symptoms, other than minor bleeding/spotting some days and heavy flow other days. I don t feel dizzy or in pain. I am not and never have been on the birth control pill and I don t take any medications. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Prolonged period since last 4 months is not normal. It could be due to adenomyosis/fibroid, endoemtriosis, hormonal imbalance, polyp, cervix/endometrium dysplasia. I would suggest to consult gynecologist and undergo vaginal examination, reproductive hormone analysis, USG scan, PAP smear/colposcopy if needed. Specific treatment depend on cause.progesterone pill and tranexemic acid will help you to stop bleeding,

Avoid stress, take healthy diet with iron supplements, drink plenty of water and maintain proper pelvic hygiene.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
