Hi.Can understand your concern. As per your query cause of edema can be many which may include cardiac or liver or renal disorders.sometimes peripheral edema also present thyroid hormone deficiency. The most important feature you have to notice is whether it is pitting type or non pitting type edema. In pitting type when you slightly press the edematous skin with finger ,indentation is formed which goes slowly.Generally pitting type edema generally denotes renal or liver disorder.I also suggest you to get your thyroid hormone test done.....Do not worry just you need to know the type of edema present (pitting or non pitting)and then proceed to know the underlying cause....In the mean time you should reduce your salt intake and elevate your legs for sometime.Drugs which induce urination will be helpful. You can consult a physician for proper diagnosis and treatment..Hope the information helps you.Take care.

General & Family Physician Dr. Shoaib Khan's  Response
Hi.

Edema is a very general symptom and can be caused by various conditions like a renal abnormality, liver abnormalities, heart failure, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, etc. I cannot comment on the cause without an elaborate evaluation and so I would recommend a doctors visit along with an array of tests to find the cause Krishna.

Best wishes.
