What Causes Persistent Dry Cough Despite Taking Albuterol?

42 years old male. Non smoker, some second hand smoke exposure. Construction worker. Persistent dry cough. Sleep is disturbed @ night. Wakes up at night feeling deprived of air. X-ray negative of abnormal findings. On Albuteral with poor effect. On Prednisone 20mg BID day 3/7.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you are getting intolerant to dust and pollution and seems like Allergic reaction which can be due to a number of common factors like dust, pollen, animal danders,mold, grasses, trees etc..
I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Patch test, RAST test, food challenge test etc can help in diagnosis and ruling out the exact cause of allergic reaction..
You can be advised to continue taking steroid inhaler Albuterol and Prednisone as well as anti allergics like Levocetrizine can be advised..
You can also use a humidifier in your room as it will reduce drying of throat and ease in breathing..
Cough suppressant syrups like Dextromethorphan can also be taken..
The Allergist can also give Immunotherapy to reduce the severity and frequency of allergic reaction..
