What Causes Persistent Cough?

What s the cause of a cough that has persisted for months? I get a tickle in my chest and it makes me cough deeply until it goes away. I can feel a little mucus in my airway, and sometimes in the throat. Sometimes I cough up white, bubbly phlegm. I have vomitted at times. No fever.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. As far as the symptom of 'tickle in the chest' is concerned probably it could be post nasal drip- a sensation of mucus trickling from the back of your nose down into your throat due to hay fever, allergies or irritants.

PS. Consult an ENT specialist [for quick visual examination of the throat] and for any necessary investigation(s)

2. As the symptom [coughing] is there for months, thus following should be your approach:

i. Ask for investigations like
. Hb%, WBC for eosinophilia
. X-ray chest for TB, Pneumonia
. If other investigations are normal, HIV test [as routine]

PS. As cough is there for > 15 days, thus this is an indication for immediate X-ray.
