What Causes Persistent Constipation While Being On Stool Softners?
I had severe constipation early Saturday morning with impaction. Very uncomfortable. This is highly unusual for me. Diarrhea is my norm. Never have had constipation in the past. Took 3 Dulcolax tabs and got relief approx. an hour after taking. Have been take stool softener ever since. My usual BM s are daily or every other day. Have not really had a BM since Saturday a.m. Just went to bathroom and had a BM which did not smell, looked like creamy chicken gravy (gross). Should I be concerned?

Large intestine is the organ which concentrates the waste products of digestion. If there is any abnormality in its muscle relaxation, constipation occurs. Constipation is due to excessive concentration of the formed stool which results in hard stools. Laxatives are the agents that helps to soften the stools used as a treatment for constipation. Dulcolax is a stimulant laxative which increases the water content of the stool and helps to soften the stool to relieve constipation.
Steatorrhea is a condition in which the individuals release stools high in fat in excess of 7 grams which is more than normal. The condition usually presents with foul smelling, greasy stools because excess fat in stool. Plenty of fluids with balanced diet helps to relieve constipation. If the condition not improves, it should be evaluated to rule any abnormalities. Pancreatitis, parasitic infection also cause acute steatorrhea. Visit the gastroenterologist for further opinion.
