What Causes Paresthesia Like Sensation Deep In Chest?

I have a sensation deep in my chest. To the left of my sternum. Near the top side of my heart. It occurs with intensity 2 or 3 times at night , lying down only. It feels like paresthesia. It only lasts 1 minute. It starts lightly then intensifies and fades. Uncomfortable but not painful. I think is could be back flow?, pressure? From my lymphatic system/thoracic duct? About 1% of the time it occurs in my diaphragm area. But never as strong as by my heart area. My heart is good. I have a very slow rate 45m. I have this tingling for 6 yrs. I m 56, female. Recent PTX, no change with surgery. Thyroid good with left side 2 cm nodule. Ganglion Cysts in left arm. All vitals good. The tingling is mysterious and bugs me. Best regards, lisa

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Parasthesia like sensation deep in the chest is commonly indicative of disorders that affect the central nervous system like stroke, encephalitis, transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes), multiple sclerosis and transverse myelitis. A tumor or vascular lesion pressed up against the brain or spinal cord can also cause paresthesia. Paresthesia like sensation in the chest can occur temporarily and it's often a sign of nerve damage.

Chronic paresthesia is usually the result of an underlying neurological disease or severe nerve damage. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Get blood work, NCV tests and lab tests, like a spinal tap done. Your treating doctor may recommend Imaging tests, X-rays, CT / MRI scan to detect the pathology causing you discomfort. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
