What Causes Palpitations Along With Elevated BP And High Cholesterol?

I woke up at 2:20 am suddenly from the sensation of my heart beating throughout my body. My bp is usually within 5 counts either way of the 130/73 range. During these last three days it has jumped from a high of 180/86/62 to 171/76/62 an d drop to 126/66/75 and back to 136/79/66 and back up to 157/90/63 then a few hours later back in the 130 and 120 range. A blood workup came back with high thyroid issues which I know need to be checked and also high cholesterol of 269 which needs to be lower. I am not on meds for either. How concerned should I be with these bp readings being all over the board? I plan to schedule an appointment when I get back home. What should I do to bring this bp down? 70 yr female 5’6” 195lbs YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

High blood pressure & high cholesterol can trigger any developing cardiac pathology & cause discomfort or palpitations. Your blood pressure is fluctuating, rising & falling irregularly. Its indicative of some developing pathology. You can control your blood pressure by exercising regularly, take optimum amount of sodium in your diet, abstain from addictions(alcohol, caffeine, smoking, etc). To control cholesterol eat healthy boiled home made food & avoid junk food, red meat & dairy products, refined flour. Take veggies, fruits, berries. Take a low carbohydrate diet.

However, you are suggested to get physically examined, get CBC, Urinalysis, Lipid function tests, ECG, Echo, MRI has to be done to rule out any developing cardiac pathology before it becomes life-threatening.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K,
