What Causes Painfully Itchy Lumps Behind The Scalp?

Hello Dr. Rynne, I have had bumps on the back of my scalp that are very itchy, inflamed and sometimes painful. They break open and release liquids (I believe are either clear or yellow) and crust over with a scab. My hair becomes difficult to brush because of the liquids causing mats in my hair from the liquid release. This has been going on on and off for a few months now. I have been tested for shingles, but it was negative. The doctor described one of the bumps to be blister looking or acne looking, but I never get acne like this. Please help! Thank you

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain recurring itchy bumps over the back of scalp can occur due to causes like hair follicle infection of Folliculitis, bacterial infection causing Impetigo, allergic reaction causing Contact Dermatitis etc..

I would suggest you to consult a Trichologist or Dermatologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like microscopic examination of the scrapings from the scalp and blood tests can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised antibiotics, anti inflammatory medicines, anti allergic medicines and topical application of antibiotic and steroid ointment..
Avoid scratching the bumps to avoid infection..
Wash the scalp every alternate day with a mild shampoo..
Avoid moisture accumulation in the scalp..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
