What Causes Painful Pulsations In The Bladder During Pregnancy?

Hi, I m 30 weeks pregnant and have been having a pulsing kind of painful sensation in what feels like my bladder for the past couple of hours. I took an at home UTI test that was negative. I ve been drinking plenty of water and shouldn t be dehydrated. Today wasn t a particularly stressful or active day. Sometimes it s happening a couple of times a minute, and sometimes it s every few minutes. I m not notcing any kind of rhythm and it s less painful now than when it began. Could I be in labor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pain in lower abdomen (where bladder lies) in later weeks of pregnancy could be:

- Due to urinary infection involving bladder- here it is associated with pain or burning in urine. To exclude this a lab urine test for routine & microscopic findings is advisable, followed by specific treatment as per need.

- It might be indigestion/ constipation causing more gas formation, which being trapped in lower bowels can cause such symptom. Simple digestive enzymes/ mild purgatives or fiber rich diet with lot of water consumption (as you already are doing ) and exercises like walking /yoga (under expert guidance ) would help,

- At this stage of pregnancy baby's head proceeds down in pelvis, causing stretching of uterine muscles and pelvic ligaments to enhance Braxton hicks contractions and mild tenderness in lower abdomen. More over increased blood suly to the part can be felt as pulsations by a sensitive person.

Mostly it is a normal physiological change & does not need medication. * Still Troublesome pain should be evaluated by physical examinations and needful investigations by an expert to be followed by medications per need. Please consult your treating gynecologist.

Thanks,
