What Causes Painful Joints And Difficult Breathing After Having Anaphylactic Reaction?

Hi, I had an anaphylatic reaction after an iron infusion of Venofer 300ml, dripped approx for 1 hr 45 min. On May 28, 2015. I went to ER and was given salumedrol and Benadryl. 4 days later my body is still in pain and my breathing is labored at times. My joints ( fingers, knees, elbows, toes, etc) and back are still hurting. My hematologist did not give me follow instructions on what I can do to help with the recovery. I m taking Tylenol to ease the pain. I also have a ex of Sarcoidosis since 2012. Is there anything I shoukd be doing besides resting and drinking plenty of water?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Venofer (iron sucrose) is a prescription infusion medication used to treat iron deficiency anemia. It may cause serious hypersensitivity reactions or allergic reactions after administration. Serious hypersensitivity reactions or allergic reactions including anaphylactic type reactions can trigger the immune system to produce inflammation, which can lead to joint and muscle aches in different areas of the body like fingers, knees, elbows, toes, back etc.

Chronic body aches, breathing difficulties etc., may be signs of an immune system reaction which can be caused by the anaphylactic reaction due to administration of iron infusion of Venofer. Antihistamines and corticosteroids are the choice of treatment here. If this anaphylactic reaction induced joint pain or body aches persist for long or bother you, then you should consult your doctor promptly for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
