Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having pain in my upper rib cage on the right side. I am also having pain in my back about the lower mid back on the left side. Is it heartburn or something I should be more concerned about? I have had the pain in my right side before and have attributed it to heartburn, but the combination of bOth rib pain and back pain has me a little concerned.
Pain in the right upper rib cage and at the same time pain on the left side on the back can be due to local inflammation of the ribs and/or muscles akin to costochondritis. Heartburn is burning in the center of the chest or back, which is usually enhanced by foods and fluids, relieved by antacids and a PPI like Pantoprazole.
Hence, take a PPI and antacid to see if there is a relief that can help to get a proper diagnosis. If there is a relief to get a consultation of a gastroenterologist and an appointment for an Upper GI Endoscopy and other tests. Also get an EKG/ECG, and X-ray chest to rule out any causes related to the heart and lungs or pleura. Further management depends upon the findings and clinical evaluation.
Hope I have answered your query.
