What Causes Pain In The Upper Abdomen On The Right Side?

I have a dull achy pain in my upper right abdomen, i m worried it could be my liver. I literally don t have any other symptoms that I know of, and I feel that I notice the ache more and it s more pronounced while sitting hunched over. And while standing I feel it doesnt really ache as much.

Hello,

1. As the pain is on the right side, consult with a General surgeon because as I'm unable to examine you directly it probably could range from heartburn/ gallstones/ appendicitis to peptic ulcer. [might go for Ultrasonography of abdomen] for Amoebic liver abscess and Cholecystitis.

PS. pain could be a pleural pathology. [ask for chest X-ray to exclude pleuritis, pleural effusion].

2. Later, you can check with a Gastroenterologist who may be able to diagnose the cause of your stomach pain and ask for necessary examinations like endoscopy, blood examination, X-ray, CT scan & MRI, till then

- avoid undue mental stress
- avoid spicy/oily food and reduce caffeine/alcohol intake
- drink lots of water, both with meals and in between them

3. Although it could turn out to be simple indigestion or heartburn which might get benefited from OTC medications, but consult with your primary care doctor since sometimes there may be an underlying medical condition/situation which needs appropriate treatment.

PS. At present all I can say is that it might be a 'gastrointestinal' symptoms thus you should contact either a general surgeon, gastroenterologist or Gynecologist [since not knowing your sex] and if not sure consult your GP who after reviewing your case history and physical examination will refer you to specialist concerned.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
