What Causes Pain In The Thumb And Wrist?

I have new wrist - thumb pain on my right side - brand new as of a week ago. It is achy and hurts when I move my wrist - I work on a laptop 4X/wk and was wondering if this could be carpal tunnel or arthritis. I am 58 and have not experienced this before. Never been dx with arthritis before.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

All the history is suggestive that you have possibly "carpal tunnel syndrome"
Its a very common clinical condition especially in obese middle aged females..The pain and discomfort is due to compression of median nerve(one of the major nerve in your hand) at the wrist.
I suggest you to consult a general practitioner and do the following:
1.Do a detailed clinical evaluation to confirm the diagnosis.(you can try this at home,Hold your hand in front of you and passively flex your wrist, letting your wrist hang down for 60 seconds,if you feel sharp pain or numbness you may have carpel tunnel).
2.Get a TFT(thyroid Function Test) and blood sugar level find out primary cause of carpel.
3.Do a lipid profile study.
4.nerve conduction study if you have numbness.

If the diagnosis of "carpel tunnel syndrome" is confirmed you can try the following:
1.Physiotherapy under the instructions of a qualified physiotherapist.
2.Analgesics like "diclofenac" and "aspirin"
3.Vitamin B supplements which improve the health of the nerve.
4.Lose extra weigh if you have any.
If you have experiencing severe pain that affect your daily activities I suggest you to consult an orthopedician for detailed evaluation.
You may require minor surgical procedures like steroid injection or surgical correction of defect.

Hope this information helps.
Regards.
