What Causes Pain In The Lower Back On The Left Side?

Everyday, after I wake up, had a light breakfast, shaved etc, about an hour later I have a pain on my lower left side of my back. It seems to pulse. I take ibuprofen (200mg), 1 at a time, 30 min. apart, until I have take 3. It does not help. I personally think that it is my liver. It happens every day in the morning at approximately 11am. I get up around 8:30am. Several months ago I noticed that there seemed to be blood in my urine. only during the time that my lower back was hurting. It (blood) was only present for one urine elimination. And only in the morning or early afternoon. I have not notice any blood in my urine for the past week and a half. This has been going for five months. at about 1:30pm it subsides and stays away until the next day. Then repeats. What is going on Doc? Am I in trouble?

Hello Dear. One of the possibility which comes to my mind first is urinary stones, since you mentioned you had blood in the urine in the past. You can meet a doctor who will advice you to get urine examined. In the urine analysis if there is traces of blood then you may be advised to undergo an Ultrasonography (USG) scanning. If there are stones it will be shown in the scan.

Another possibility of back ache may be disc problem like spondylitis or disc prolapse etc. In this case you need to meet an orthopedic surgeon.

Treatment for lower back pain depends upon the patient's history and the type and severity of pain. The vast majority of lower back pain cases get better within six weeks without surgery, and lower back pain exercises are almost always part of a treatment plan. Rest, Heat and ice packs and medications like paracetamol, ibuprofen, diclofenac will take care of back pain.

I suggest you to meet a physician who will evaluate you, and see for urinary stone. If not he/she will refer you to orthopedic surgeon.

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
Dr Sanjay Kini
