What Causes Pain In The Lower Abdomen On The Right Side?

I have a pain in my very lower right side of my abdomen, usually in the early morning, that goes away after a bowel movement. Is this okay? I am having a regularly scheduled colonoscopy in March. I am a 66 years old female in good physical condition.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. going by your history and symptoms, the most probable diagnosis could be functional IBS [irritable bowel syndrome] which is a collection of symptoms ranging from bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, and constipation.

2. At present all I can say is that it might be a 'gastrointestinal' symptoms thus you should contact either a general surgeon, gastroenterologist or Gynecologist and if not sure consult your GP who after reviewing your case history and physical examination will refer you to specialist concerned.

PS. The most common diagnoses of lower abdominal pain relate to uterine, gonadal, renal, and bladder complications, [less common causes like primary dermatologic and musculoskeletal problems as well as referred pain and neuropathies related to underlying vertebral and spinal cord complications can also occur], so examination is mandatory for further workup and management.

In Females, [before colonoscopy], consult a Gynecologist for any underlying pathologies like endometriosis, uterine fibroids or pelvic inflammatory disease [PID]

2. If after pelvic examination the doctor suspects an underlying condition, she may order further investigations like MRI, CT, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy since surgery may be needed to remove the abnormal tissue [if any].
