What Causes Pain In The Hip Radiating To The Knee And Ankle?

I am a 47 year old female and recently I have developed an ach in my right hip which radiates to my knee and ankle. The pain has increased over the past two months becoming almost debilitating making it difficult to walk or climb steps. At night the pain is throbbing from my hip to my ankle. I have started sleeping with a small pillow between my knees which eases the pain for an hour or so but I haven’t had a good night’s sleep since the pain began. My leg is very stiff making it difficult to get in and out of my car or do my job because it requires walking, stooping and bending. Any input to could ease my pain would be appreciated.

Hello,

Very likely the pain you are experiencing is due to sciatica pain as it spreads from the hip to the ankle. You will need to take ibuprofen 600 mg every 6 hours after food, paracetamol 500 mg at the same time and also having some physiotherapy might be beneficial to relieve the resulting muscular spasms.
If you have any weakness in the leg, any numbness in the private area or you notice you have problems with control of urine or bowel movement, then you will need to see a doctor as soon as possible.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
