What Causes Pain In The Chest And Middle Back?

At work today I was just standing, talking to my supervisor. All of a sudden my left side in my rib cage under my chest started to tense up. Then it started in my middle back. It hurts so bad like it stuck being tense. I also have pain in my chest when I try to put my chin to my chest. I would rank it a 9. What is wrong? Should I go to hospital?

Thank you for your query.

Yes please, go to the emergency department and have it checked out to rule out heart disease.

Any chest pain, especially that of sudden onset and severity should be immediately checked out.

-how old are you and what is your height and weight?
-do you smoke or consume alcohol?
-any other medical issues? Medications?
-any surgeries in the past?

I recommend :
- a physician or ER consult immediately
- electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiogram
- chest x-ray
-blood tests (complete blood count, lipid profile, blood glucose levels, cardiac enzymes, kidney & liver function tests)
-urine analysis
-a CT angiogram to check for any aorta problems

Based on the above tests results and more importantly, findings of your clinical exam, a diagnosis and treatment plan will be formulated.

Please do not drive and take someone along with you.
Please seek medical attention right away.
