What Causes Pain, Anxiety Disorder And Tightness In The Chest?

I have had chest pain, tight and dull throbbing for the past week. It all started when something happened with my heart and it caused a panick attack and I had to get the ambulance out. Ever since my heart started playing up, especially two days after when I woke up with throbbing pain on the left of my chest believed to be my heart and have had this ever since. I have seen 3 different doctors, I have had many ECG s the past week and blood tests, a week ago when my first ECG came back abnormal due to fluttering of the heart, I was put on Propranolol 40mg morning and night and Diazapan 2mg for night time, I am now currently waiting for my Cardiologist appointment fearing for my life everyday and in and out of hospital for checks to see if everything is okay in the mean time. I can t work, I m meant to be going back to work on Wednesday but I don t see how. I will try my best, but I have bad side effects from these beta blockers, I am currently trying my best to try speed up the Cardiologist appointment as quick as possible. I am loosing my mind. Trying to be positive for my partner and my family. My chest has not stopped hurting since two days after my panic attack and the doctor says its 99% down to anxiety which I highly doubt is wrong the way I am feeling with the pain. If theirs any advice or information which could put me at ease or give me a heads up that would be great. I m 22, a non smoker, non drinker, work 40 hours per week before this happened as a Receptionist, vegetarian however make sure I have a balanced diet as much as I can. I have given up tea, chocolate.. Etc.. Anything that can harm my heart and chest. At times I get palpitations on these beta blockers and get scared my heart is going to stop because there is funny rhythms. Thank you.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern and going through your history following is/are necessary guidelines:

1. Since chest pain and abnormal ECG is present thus consult a Cardiologist for stress test and angiography.
PS. It is wiser to detect angina early and ask for investigation and bypass surgery, than to wait till an infarct develop.

ii. Funny rhythms (palpitations) could be due to anxiety, anemia, hyperthyroidism, left ventricular hypertrophy and Arrhythmias fir which ask for:
. ECG & Holter monitor test for Arrhythmia
. Serum T3,T4 and TSH to exclude hyperthyroidism
. Blood sugar to rule out hypoglycemia
. Hemoglobin for blood value

2. Till then:
. Avoid excess of tea & coffee
. Avoid alcohol & smoking
. Avoid mental strain
. Avoid sudden exertion like running to catch a bus, moving furniture in house, climbing stairs in hurry

3. Beta blockers are drug of choice in hypertensives with angina and tachycardia or tachyarrhythmia which reduce cardiac mortality and sudden death due to arrhythmia and if you are experiencing side effect with use of the same than your attending doctor may prescribe an alternative drug, preferably a calcium channel blocker.

4. If you want to avoid surgical procedure then one may follow the 5 step approach

i. Exercise: brisk walking for 45 minutes every day, at least 5 days a week.
. Yogasanas/ Pranayama to relax and stretch various muscles (learn under expert guidance)

ii. Stress Management: practice meditation and learn to live with a relaxed mind

iii. Low fat diet:
Avoid: alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, butter, ghee, cheese, unskimmed milk, saturated oils, deep fried foods, yellow of egg.

Take: more of soups, plenty of salads, sprouted pulses, more of bhajis, skimmed milk, margarine instead of butter, onion, garlic, soybean, apple, curd of skimmed milk

iv. Elimination of known risk factors: maintain ideal weight (if overweight), avoid mental strain, control sugar (if present)

v. Drugs:
. Keep the vasodilator at hand: in bedroom, in bathroom, at the office, in travel kits. It is also very important that the relatives know where the tablets will always be found in case of emergency.
