I continue to have outbreaks of impetigo and have no idea why... so far its been 3 times in the past 3 months and I ve been in a totally different environment each time. I haven t been around children or anyone else who has it... is this something that can stay alive inside of me and then just flare up? Can I kill off the colony or am I stuck with this indefinitely?
Impetigo is cased by a bacteria called staphylococci and sometimes streptococci.
It could persist on the skin as colinies usually around the nostrils, umbilicus and perianal areas. These are called as carrier sites. If untreated , the colonies could cause repeated infection.
You would benefit from taking a course of oral antibiotic like cephalexin or amoxicillin.
Apply a topical antibiotic containing 2 % mupirocin twice a day on the lesions as well as on the carrier sites ( mentioned above).
Get your sugars checked as diabetes can predispose to recurring impetigo.
Dry skin could also be a predisposing factor. Use a good moisturizer if you have dry skin to prevent dryness and scratching which could introduce bacteria into the skin.
Hope this helps you.
Take care.
