What Causes Numbness And Weakness In Right Arm Inspite Of Taking Lyrica?

Hi,I m male, 43, 178cm, 82kgs, I ve had in the past very bad lower disc trouble but with the proper treatment and continued exercise it s in pretty good shape now. At the time I was prescribed OxyContin 10mgs which after 4 years was at 100mgs but this was 3 years ago. At the time I also had numbness is 4th and 5th fingers on both hands which I put down to the potency of morphine. However after stopping all painkillers I still have the numbness even now. It didn t worry me too much but 2 months I also started to feel weakness in my right arm up to the shoulder. When working over head I can t keep my arm up very long with out complete drop from weakness. Now the severity of it ranges from not being able to lift a full kettle of water, to my hand dropping a towel on some days. When I try to force my arm to lift something, my forearm and bicep muscles feel pressure and my hand just hangs from the wrist. I take Lyrica 100mgs up to 4 x daily on days when my back feels overworked or to relieve the numbness of fingers. I don t really have other symptoms except maybe feeling tired a lot of the time. I work construction so as you can imagine my arm is really causing a problem for me. Thank you in advance, Ger.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Ger,

I am glad you are continuing your exercises to keep away from lower back pain and please continue.
With regards to your right arm and weakness , I would think of some shoulder issues such as rotator cuff tendonitis or tears which might cause trouble working overhead and some weakness as well. Though Lyrica helps with this type of pain, it's a good idea to do an USG of right shoulder and go for steroid injection if detected some tendonitis. There are some physiotherapy exercises to strengthen your rotator cuff as well. Hope this helps .
