What Causes Night Sweats And Persistent Cough?

Hi, I am a 43 year old female. Over the last few months I have had rather severe night sweats that wake me from sleep... (chest area dripping... sometimes back of the neck also, but rarely). Also over the last few months I also have had a persistant cough... coughing up mucus every morning, clear/white/or yellowish... and it is rather severe and not getting any better... worse infact... more coughing through the day, also waking me up coughing of a night. ( I am a smoker... I know!!!) But both these things have only just started occuring over the last 4 or so months, should I be overly concerned?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Night sweats with persistent coughing, expectoration for the last 4 months is definitely a cause of concern.
The probable causes can be as follows:
- Infection in upper or lower respiratory tract.
- Recurrent viral infection.
- Allergic problems super-added with bacterial infection off and on.
Hence I would advise you the following:
- Consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation and examination.
- Investigations of blood, phlegm.
-X-ray chest and CT scan of chest and sinuses if indicated by detailed history and examination.
- Second opinion of a Pulmonologist.
All these will give a proper diagnosis and thus allow a proper management as per the cause found.
You also have to find the instigating or enhancing factors and avoid all these as prevention is better than cure.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
