What Causes Muscle Pain Behind The Shoulder Blade?

I have been experiencing muscle pain in back at my shoulder blade. It feels like someone is jabbing a knife in it. I have visited the chiropractor two times and has not relieved it. Today I am experiencing muscle spasms in the area. I have have iced, used pain patches and a back vibrator. My muscle is knotted up according to the chiropractor and my husband. Should I see a medical doctor?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Yes, it would be best to be assessed. In addition to examination of the shoulder, you may also need imaging of the shoulder joint.

Jabbing, sticking or sharp pain can sometimes be related to damage to nerves in the area.
This can sometimes be related to arthritis of the neck or shoulder or another cause.
Other causes include : (1) low levels of vitamin b12 or folate
(2)diabetes
(3)side effect of medication
(4)abnormal levels of vitamin b6
(5)liver or kidney disease
(6)trauma- as in the arthritis mentioned earlier
(7)infection such as shingles
(8)thyroid disease

I hope this helps
