What Causes Mood Swings After Hysterectomy?

yeah, my wife underwent surgical full hysterectomy (Complete castration) and is having emotional swings and major issues with hormones. Can an endrocrenologist help her get her hormones better balanced than just an MD? Also, is the other hormones (progesterone and testosterone) really necessary or just hype? She is also very depressed, says she feels like an empty shell.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A total hysterectomy involves the removal of the ovaries and the woman may feel the symptoms of the menopause, which in this case, can be even stronger than the usual menopause because of the sudden change in the hormones.

To relieve her symptoms she may get hormone replacement therapy for a few months. A general physician should be able to assist her well enough but if she prefers to be seen by an endocrinologist, this can be an option as well.

As for depression, she will need to be seen by a psychiatrist and probably get treatment with an SSRI drug and it might be advisable to have some psychotherapy as well.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
