Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Almost about a week ago, my tailbone started having mild pain. As the week went on, the pain has worsened. There is no swelling, redness or bruise marks on my tailbone; it looks perfectly normal. Just a few minutes ago, I took my tempature and I have a fever of 102 F. Any ideas on what might be wrong?
Your symptoms suggest coccydynia.Coccydynia is a type of lower back pain felt around the last bone at the base of the spine (known as the coccyx). X-ray of coccyx should be taken in AP/Lateral view. It is mostly managed conservatively. For pain in coccyx region,a cushion with a hole at the back under the coccyx is recommended. For prolonged cases,anti-inflammatory medications such as NSAIDS may be prescribed.Local nerve block injection is also helpful. You should avoid lifting heavy objects and concentrate on proper body posture. Surgery may be required in refractory cases.
