What Causes Lump On The Head Behind The Ear Which Is Painful?

I have a lump on my head it is located behind my right ear. I saw my doctor and he sent me to get an xray and it showed that it was not attached to a bine so he sent me to a dermatologist who said he had no idea but due to its location it was not cancerous.its still there and been about six month. It changes in size. Im guessing it swells up at times. It can be about the size if two marbles at times and it then causes pain. What could this be? Why can no one tell me what they are and why does no doctor seem to be concerned? I dont think a bump behind the ear on my scalp is normal.

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have lump on the head behind the ear which is painful, Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like abscess , sebaceous cysts , lymphadenopathy , acne mononucleosis , infected lipoma and mastoiditis . But in you case it seems to me that the symptoms are due to either infected sebaceous cysts or lymphadenopathy. For now apply warm compresses and take anti histamine like benadryl twice a day. I would suggest you to consult dermatologist for proper examination. Doctor will examine physically to check tenderness and consistency , may order biopsy or blood test . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with anti inflammatory.
