What Causes Low Blood Sugar Levels Post Levofloxacin Intake?

I am a 73 year old female with diabetes, anemia, hypertension and mild kidney disease. I have been having pretty bad ear infection and was prescribed levofloxacin 500mg bid for ten days . Began medication on Dec. 8 and the last few days have experienced several blood sugar drops to 60 s and had been in good control prior to this medication with A1C of 6.4. Have also experienced blood pressure drops with both diastolic and systolic reading under 100/60. Blood pressure had been stable at 120 s over 80 s until taking this medicine. Anemia has been treated with arinesp injections but levels last week did not meet the requirements. Off .1 and .2 respectively. Should I stop the medication , reduce to once daily or what.

Hello

Levofloxacin may sometimes cause hypoglycemia, therefore this drug may indeed have something to do with your symptoms. If you're taking it twice daily then this is too much and may have contributed to the symptoms. Patients with reduced renal functionality may need even lower dosages and we usually start with the normal dose but we may have to increase the time between doses. I don't have the necessary data to determine the appropriate dosage for you (body weight, serum creatinine level).

Remember to avoid trying any changes to your regimen without first consulting the treating doctor!

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
