Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently had a routine CBC at my oncologist. I have a low normal hemoglobin and hematocrit for decades now. I am 70 years old, a retired biochemist. My CBC results indicated an MPV (abnormal value) of 6.1. I asked my oncologist after I got the results and was told that it my be a result of my atorvastatin (20 mg/daily) and that the result is of no consequence. My liver enzymes AST & ALT were normal. I am currently recovering from a bad head cold which is a result of a possible infection in my sinus. My head cold was at its worst when the blood sample was taken. I can find no literature that links a statin with t low MPV value. There is however a possible connection between a low MPV and a viral infection. Do you doctors have any advice on this matter?
However, if it is the only abnormal parameter I agree with your doctor that it is of no consequence.
It is not a parameter which is very telling in isolation, only when there are other abnormalities.
Those conditions I mentioned have other associated changes, not an isolated low MPV. So I really do not think there is something to worry about if the rest was normal.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Olsi Taka, Neurologist

What Causes Low MPV And Sinusitis?
Hello, I must confess that I am not aware of any connection between statins and low MPV value. It is most commonly encountered when there is bone marrow hypoplasia, low production of blood elements from the blood marrow. Thrombocytosis, increased platelet count may be another cause. Hypothyroidism may be a cause as well. However, if it is the only abnormal parameter I agree with your doctor that it is of no consequence. It is not a parameter which is very telling in isolation, only when there are other abnormalities. Those conditions I mentioned have other associated changes, not an isolated low MPV.
