What Causes Loss Of Smell And Taste?

I am curious about my seance of smell and taste and what could be the reason for. I barely have a sense of smell or as I say none. I can t tell what a smell is like I can t tell if something smells good or bad. I can smell mint if it is really strong like a mint/peperment oil near my nose. I have a sense of taste I can tell if I like the flavor or not but I cant distinguish a flavor really. I can not really tell the difference between pepsie or coke unless I have the two side by side and I can t tell you flavors ex. well like fruit flavors in jellie beans or other artificially fruit flavors unless very strong like the individual thing. I can tell in between the more hire citric acid once to the really sweet ones. It s been a life long thing I don t know if it s physical thing as in those areas are damaged or if it s my senses are off when communicating to the brain ect. I keep forgetting to talk to talk to a doctor because it dose not affect me in any bad ways

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There are many medical conditions that cause loss of smell.
I suggest you the following examination to confirm the diagnosis:
-a complete blood count to see if there is an infection
-an x-ray of the sinuses
-an endoscopy to search for polyps in the nasal area
-a visit to a dentist

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
