What Causes Loss Of Hearing, Smell And Taste?

I have lost my hearing, smell and taste. Went to ENT and they put me on a steroid for a week. Had a ct scan and they said my sinuses were full of infection. Have been on antibiotics for 21 days but I still can t hear out of left side and still can t smell or taste. Will these things get better?

Hi,

Loss of hearing can be due to fluid accumulation behind the eardrum with blocked Eustachian tube and can happen secondary to severe sinus infection or sinusitis.

Loss of sense of smell and taste can also occur due to congested sinuses as the senses are interrelated to each other.

Yes, they can get better gradually as the infection resolves.

You can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants like Pseudoephedrine, do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room.

You can also be advised decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline. Avoid spicy and chilled foods. Do warm compresses around nostrils.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
