What Causes Loss Of Appetite And Weight With PTB Medicines?

thank you for that, i am just interested regarding to the information that is about minimal ptb, i actually had a friend you keep on asking me regarding to her problem. Her name is Kat, 20 y/o, 4'8 ft and 32kg she told me that she had her pre employment exam last june 21, 2011 and find out that she had a results of minimal ptb due to the hazy densities of the upper left lobe, While continuing her medication she felt lost of appetite, weight loss, is that due to the effect of medication on her? how long does it takes to complete her medication and consuming rifamficin? does the medicine may affect her other organs? tnx......

I can understand your concern.
Yes, these side effects can be due to tubercular drugs.
Almost all anti tubercular Drugs cause gastritis, hyperacidity etc. And these can cause decreased appetite, weight loss etc.
Usual course of treatment is for tuberculosis is at least 6-8 months.
So she needs to take tb drugs for at least 6-8 hours.
And yes, these drugs can affect liver and kidney.
Rifampicin, pyrazinamide and isoniazid can affect liver and cause drug induced hepatitis.
Ethambutol and streptomycin can affect kidney.
So kindly get done liver and kidney function tests every morning monthly to prevent other organs damage.
