What Causes Light Vaginal Spotting After Having Unsafe Sex?

Back in December I had a miscarriage . I passed the baby completely on December 7th and had bleeding up to week after . My period came on the 2nd or 3rd of January and lasted 4/5 days . It came again on the 27th and lasted until the 31st . I had unprotected sex on February 2nd and 3rd . I m not sure when I ovulate but I had light spotting when I used the bathroom ( today Feb. 5th) Is there a possibility I m pregnant or that implantation bleeding occurred ?

Hello,

Hello, sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I gather from the details of your question that you are trying for another pregnancy. The dates of your last period at the time of this asking question appear to be 27th January.

It means that you were on Day 6 and 7 of your cycle when you had sex. In case the regular periods and cycles had been established after the miscarriage, it is unlikely that you had ovulated at this time.

The light bleeding you have reported could be an incidental bleed between periods that sometimes happens while female hormones are trying to attain their natural rhythm and balance prior to the miscarriage.

It is also like to be from a local problem such as a raw area over the neck of the womb or cervix. It is called cervical erosion. It is worth getting a gynaecological examination and a cervical smear at the same time to rule out this possibility.

Sometimes infection of cervix or vagina can also result in bleeding, brown or a blood stained discharge. Check out if there is a persistent discharge, foul smell or persistent soreness with or without sex. The examining doctor can also take swabs for infection at the same time as taking the smear.

In all likelihood this was a one off event and your body would have healed. The investigations would be needed only if symptoms persist. The general advice is to wait for 6 months to allow the body to heal and return to its natural rhythm before trying for another pregnancy after a miscarriage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sabina Hussain
