What Causes Large Welts On Knee After Having Knee Replacement?
My husband had knee replacement 3 and a half weeks ago. For about the last 10 days or so he is broken out in large welts almost blistering. We have gradually removed several of his medications but he still is breaking out. We know he is allergic to sulfer so we stopped the morphine sulfate. He is still breaking out. What could cause this
Based on the symptoms you have mentioned. It is possible that your husband is allergic to on of the medications that he is using.
If there is no medication that he is allergic to or if he is not on any painkillers, then the chance of getting an allergy is minimal.
Other reasons for welts would be a late allergic reaction to the knee implant. This can happen after 3 to 4 weeks. This is a cell mediated reaction. It would be best to confirm this with a skin allergen test.
In case the allergy is the cause, you would need steroids that are prescribed by your doctor to help avoid further reaction.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
