Suffered A Fractured Femur. Have Arthritis In The Knee. Knee Replacement Advised. Need To Remove The Rod Before The Surgery?
I fractured the top part of my femur 1 1/2 years ago and had a "nailing" procedure. The fracture healed well, but I have considerable arthritis in my knee that causes me much pain. I'd like to get a knee replacement. Is it usual to have the rod removed prior to knee replacement, or are the two procedures done simultaneously? Are there options other than removing the rod? Tanks

For the knee replacement procedure, the intramedullary nail that you have in the femur can remain in its usual place. There is no need to remove the nail before the surgery.
