What Causes Joint Pain And Tingling In Hands While Having Low Calcium Level?

My sister has severe joint pain - all over body, tingling and numbness in hands, fatigue, diarrhea. She has had numerous blood tests, urine tests, stool test and everything look normal but her calcium. Her calcium was extremely low so she is now taking high does of calcium. Her body is not holding the calcium very well, however, when she first started taking heavy calcium, she saw less joint pain.

Hello,

The following are few symptoms of hypocalcemia or decreased levels of calcium in blood:
1) Muscle cramps, especially in your back and legs.
2) Dry, scaly skin.
3) Brittle nails.
4) More coarse hair than what’s normal for you.
5) Tingling in your lips, tongue, fingers and/or feet.
6) Muscle aches.
7) Muscle spasms in your throat that make it difficult to breathe (laryngospasm).
8) Stiffening and spasms of your muscles (tetany).
9) Seizures.
10) Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia).
11) Congestive heart failure.

The following treatments and medications are used for hypocalcemia:
1) Oral calcium pills: Calcium pills or supplements may be used to restore your calcium to normal levels.
2) Vitamin D supplement: People who have chronic hypocalcemia often take a vitamin D supplement along with calcium pills so that their bodies can properly absorb the calcium.
3) Synthetic form of parathyroid hormone (PTH): If you have hypoparathyroidism that is causing hypocalcemia, you have you take a synthetic form of PTH.
4) IV calcium gluconate: If your hypocalcemia is severe and you are experiencing muscle cramps or spasms (tetany), you may receive an IV of calcium gluconate in the hospital.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
