What Causes Itchy Vaginal Area?

Hi, For a while now I have had an itch in my vaginal area which hadn t been anything discomforting. I was travelling and I thought that it might have been due to change of climate and etc but it continued after my return home. Even after being back home for couple weeks now there has been no improvement. After inspecting the area I noticed that my clitoris is the source of the problem. It is very itchy, looks like it has an inflemation and seems to be peeling! I always wash and dry myself after using the bathroom and I doubt I would have STD as I m not sexually active and to be more procise I m what you call a virgin. I would apreciate any advice and guidance and will be grateful for your help. Thank you

Hello,

You are suffering from Itchy vaginal area. Your clitoris has become very itchy and is peeling. Since you are not sexually active vaginal itching may be due to contact dermatitis, that causes redness, itching (either mild or severe), dry or scaly skin, swelling and discomfort. In more severe cases of contact dermatitis, bumps and blisters may develop.

Some allergens like latex found in condoms or in sex toys, perfumed cosmetics and body lotions also cause contact dermatitis. Certain food triggers vaginal irritation like coffee, tea, chocolate, soda, milk, tomatoes, peanuts, etc. Not taking care of personal hygiene causes vaginal irritation. Wear soft cotton clothes, keep the private area clean and dry.

The vulva, inner thighs, groin and buttocks can become humid and collect bacteria if not kept clean, thus triggering spread of fungal infection. You can take a course of Fluconazole orally to get rid of yeast infection. You can apply a thin layer of Clotrimazole ointment in the area affected for relief. Applying hydrocortisone ointment reduces vaginal itching.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
