What Causes Itching On The Bottom Of The Feet?

Hi I m 49 years old. A couple of hours every night before bedtime the tops and soles of my feet beginning to itch badly. I have no redness or rash and they rarely itch any other time. Antifungal spray seems to take the itch away but the next day it comes right back just before bedtime.

Hello,

Itching on the soles and tops of your feet known as Pruritus. There are several reasons that may lead to itchy feet. Since your feet can be repeatedly exposed to floors, grass, damp weather and sweaty footwear, all these things can be the cause of irritation of the skin. Itchy feet may include multiple underlying diseases, exposure to the various type of microorganism (like fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites), various skin condition (like dry or moist skin), barefoot walking pr tight footwear that causes sweaty feet. In some cases, the skin may only feet itchier during the night because of a lack of outside distractions. But nighttime itchiness may also be a sign of more serious health conditions. Natural causes of nighttime itchiness include the body hormones and chemicals in the body's natural 24-hour cycle. They are increased skin temperature, increase blood flow to the skin, increased water loss from the skin(sweat). Menopause and Pregnancy can cause changes in the level of the hormone estrogen may cause dryness, itchy skin, or flushed skin. Some menopausal women describe the sensation to feel like ants crawling under their skin. Other common causes of nighttime itchiness include hives, dry skin, stress, excessive sweating, a nervous habit, allergic reaction, sunburn, chickenpox and some medication that can cause itching. In the rare case can be a sign of a serious condition such as eczema, psoriasis, fungal, thyroid condition...

If your skin dries using moisturizing soaps, bathing cool, oil, checking the bedroom for a sign of bed bugs... Staying hydrated to reduce dry skin, avoid long warm bath or shower, wearing cotton cloth.

There is also some medication available that can help treat the symptoms and prevent them from recurring. Corticosteroid cream such as hydrocortisone cream, which may help reduce inflammation. Allergy medications which may help reduce inflammation (like Benadryl/Cetirizine).

Go to see your doctor to assess what is your real problem. Such as sudden, unexplained itchiness that lasts for more than 2 weeks, dry skin at night that does not improve with the use of home remedies or lifestyle change etc...

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
