What Causes Irregular Periods?

Hi, My menstrual cycle used to be regular when I started menstruating a few years back. But recently, my menstruation has been very irregular, having between 2-6 months of gap in between my period. I take EPO as told by Pharmacists, but it hasn t been working. May I please know what the next step should be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Irregular periods could be due stress, diseases like polycystic ovary syndrome or fibroids, hormonal disorders like thyroid disease or increased prolactin levels, and pelvic inflammatory disease. You are advised to consult a gynecologist for further evaluation and to find out the exact cause for which treatment would be advised. EPO is not used in the treatment of irregular period, it is used to treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
