What Causes Irregular Periods?

Hello. on 09/07/2014 i had light brown colored blood then it was red with some clots then 09/09/2014 bleeding seemed liked it stopped but later on that day it was back now after today 09/11/2014 day 4 of this bleeding has turned into light pink and then stopped i have had increased in appetite over these 4 days and slight cramping. I am 21 and i have irregular periods last period i had was around July 20th 2014. I have had alot of intercourse with my boyfriend. not sure if this was a light period or something more.
