General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Exclusive breast feeding mothers experience absent periods also called as lactational amenorrhea. Secretion of prolactin suppresses gonadal hormones leading to absent periods. It is normal. But if intercourse happens there is definite chance of pregnancy. In order to prevent pregnancy barrier methods of contraception such as condoms can be used, since pills can be secreted in breast milk. Some newer pills such as desogesterol is available which is claimed to be safe in pregnancy can be used after doctor consultation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
