What Causes Involuntary Muscle Cramping?

What causes involuntary muscle cramping? It occurs in my fingers, and legs most frequently and is quite painful. The affected area gets stiff and often assumes unnatural shapes that I have to manually break to get any relief, or stand up on the leg/foot affected and hope I can move to change the shape/weight distribution.
