What Causes Intermittent Sharp Pain In The Navel?

I m a 39 year old male. For about 2 months, I ve been getting brief sharp pains near the bellybutton. Just a shade under and left of the bellybutton. Each pain lasts only 1 to 2 seconds, and they happen off and on throughout the day. Sometimes I go hours without any of these brief sharp pains. Movement sometimes triggers the pain. The sharp pain is in a very small spot, maybe the size of a quarter, and it feels as if it s not coming from very deep inside. The research I ve done indicates this is most likely abdominal wall pain, rather than from the organs underneith. It bothers me very little, but I wanted to get an opinion from a doctor. Thank you. -William

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that the pain may be due to neuralgia which is nerve related pain.

This can be temporary or permanent.

It can occur due to different possible causes such as: (A) vitamin b12 or folate deficiency
(B)diabetes
(C)liver or kidney disease
(D)side effect of medication
(E)exposure to toxins
(F)neurological conditions such as stroke or ms
(G)some autoimmune diseases
(H)infection such as shingles
(I) idiopathic- cause is not known

If it continues or it is bothersome, your doctor can assess you to determine the cause. This would require physical examination and blood tests (levels of vit b12 and folate, diabetes screening, checking liver and kidney)

I hope this helps
