What Causes Insomnia And Anxiety After Quitting Smoking?

YYYY@YYYY ve recently have quit smoking after 45 years and am now experiencing some sleep issues. It s been above a month now and for the past week or so I ve really been having issues sleeping. It s not like I am not sleeping it s just that I cannot get a decent sleep. I get these feelings kind of like an anxiety attack where I feel I need to get up and get outside for some air. I lay down thinking and feeling like I m not breathing but I know that I am. It s bad to a point where at 3:00 am in the morning I find myself out taking a walk or a drive in the car just to get some fresh air. I don t look forward to nighttime and almost to a point where I fear it getting dark. I ve tried taking valerian root and melatonin. Recently I feel a bit claustrophobic just sitting in my apartment during the day and need to get up and about outside. I try to stay up as long as I can then I ll go to bed watching TV until hopefully I can now longer keep my eyes open.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seem's like it has been very hard to you quit smoking and all this anxious acting is not to be left untreated. First of all, I congratulate you that you have quit smoking and I support you to move on with many other daily activities and sports.

For your anxious situation, I would suggest psychotherapy, it has helped many patients of mine. Try not to consume caffeinated drinks, eat healthy foods, and have a time out with friends.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
