What Causes Hoarseness While Having Sinus Infection?

SISTER IN LAW DEVELOPED SYMPTOM S IN APRIL AFTER SINUS INFECTION, HER VOICE BECAMESLURRY,HOARSE. WE THOUGHT SHE MIGHT HAVE HAD A STROKE BUT DOCTORS RULED THAT OUT. AN EXAM BY ENT revealed no problems. She has a juicy test which revealed nothing. She continues to have problems with her speech,,feels uneasy walking, has stopped driving. By the end of the day she is difficult to understand her speech. Her mental status remains good. She has seen neurologist,ENT, has gone to UAB in Birmingham but no answers and she continues to deterioration. Any thought would be appreciated.

Hi,

Noted the history about your sister in law having gone through opinions of ENT, Neurologist not finding the cause of her symptoms of slurred speech, hoarseness of voice and so on, she also feels uneasy walking, stopped driving.
Since you have not mentioned about any investigations I would advise her the basics as follows:
ENT Endoscopy, if needed direct laryngoscopy.
MRI of brain.
Evaluation of the laryngeal and vagus nerves.
Opinion of a speech therapist as he can find out a few things that others might miss.
If everything is normal then an opinion of a Psychiatrist must also be taken into consideration.
Watch for the level of stress and anxiety.
There are few diseases which can start like this and are slowly progressive and thus can show positive findings after a few months hence a regular follow up is a must.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
