My husband's blood test shows very high values of prolactin - more than 900 ng/ml, and he also has a TSH of 7.4 and a T4 within range but towards the lower range. What could be the cause of the very high prolactin, and what would be the possible treatments? He is around 36 years of age.
Hello, I do appreciate your concern regarding to your husband's health. The most common cause of high prolactine level is a pituitary tumor. It should be confirmed by radiological images such as MRI of the head. The high TSH level can raise also prolactin but not at these levels. The treatment depends on the tumor's size. If it is over 1 cm in diameter surgery is recommended otherwise oral therapy is efficient.
