Suggest Treatment For Recurring Breast Infection
Question: Hi, My daughter is a 45 yr old female. For the past 2 years she has had re occurring breast infections. She had them aspirated and washed out with antibiotic, took oral antibiotic, each time she would recover then again it would infect after a few months. Twice she has had Surg to clean and wash out breast infected breast tissue. Again the infection. Drs are suggesting she remove all breast tissue and ducts and have an implant. Huh, this seems too drastic and what is to say it would not come back.
Her prolactin level is 43 could this be related. Thyroid is low but she takes meds for this.

She has got high levels of Prolactin hormone (more than double the higher normal limit of 20 ng/mL).
Causes of high prolactin is either Idiopathic that means no cause can be found even on MRI of brain and is usually due to so small pituitary gland tumors that MRI skips.
Others are Macroadenomas-meaning the large pituitary gland tumors (pituitary is a structure in brain) that causes secretion of large amounts of Prolactin and some other hormones may also be there (either secreted in low or in high amounts).
Now what is the link of breast tissue issues and Prolactin?
It causes breast tissues to engorge in the milk producing areas no matter female is pregnant or not, breastfeeding or not. It causes a disease named Galactorrhea. This causes raised chances of infection of the breast tissue.
It is best to get the Brain MRI done to see if there is any Prolactinomas (tumors) in there. Please spare some time and consult an Endocrinologist for that. Also ask him to screen her for diabetes mellitus that is a bad factor in delayed wound healing. Endocrinologist may also communicate with Surgeon to come to a single point of best possible treatment for her (but after getting all the tests done by Endocrinologist).
