What Causes High Blood Sugar Levels With Normal Pancreas Tests?

Hi, My cousin has been informed by the doctor that his sugar level is 330mg/dl... He was hospitalised last year in august because his pancreas were damaged due to high Alcohol consumption.at that time, he sugar level had increased. but now wen his pancreas test was done, it is all well... but still his sugar is high. Docs did his profile test for the last 3 months to check the sugar level. and its very high. May i know wat would be the reason behind this increase? Thanks

Hi, I am Dr. Kaushik, a specialist in Preventive Medicine & Diabetology. Thanks for posting your concern in the HCM.
Please don't get confused between tests that elicit exocrine and endocrine functions of pancreas.
My understanding is, after initial damage the amylase and lipase level became higher. They came back to normal after the initial insult was over.
But, Because of that insult the insulin producing beta cells were damaged and so your cousin developed diabetes. The insult produced by the alcohol may also have initiated autoimmune response in the pancreas, that may be the reason of progressive beta cell depletion and high sugar level.
I think Insulin therapy is definitely needed at this point of time. You can write back to me for any further query related to diabetes @ http://www.HealthcareMagic.com/doctors/dr-kaushik-sarkar/68460. I will try my level best to help you.
Regards.
