What Causes High Blood Pressure?

The nurses at the doctors office of the past couple years have commented on me having a high blood pressure but the doctors never says anything about it so I just assume that it is not an issue. I checked it this morning at work and it was 170/113. I checked it again about 20 minutes ago and it was 177/117. I am 6 foot 1, 175 pounds and only 5 percent body fat. Any ideas?

Hello
Your blood pressure is indeed high, are you regular on your medications? There are plenty of causes which can cause high blood pressure. Most important ones are the weight, age, diet, life style, lipid profile and presence of other co morbid factors. Your weight is above the normal range, which could probably be one of the causes. Blood pressure increases with age of which you have not made a mention, the type of diet- diet rich in fat and carbohydrates raise the pressure. Also the lifestyle, stress type of personality with sedentary lifestyle and no exercise on a routine basis are also contributory factors. Presence of diabetes and/ or family history of diabetes/ hypertension can also influence on the blood pressure. So do a check on these and do consult a doctor for proper management.
Hope I have answered your query
Regards.
