What Causes High Bilirubin Levels, Itching All Over Body And Bloating?

Dear Doctor, Suddenly I found my bilirubin to be high 2.8. I am a male aged 51, since 3 months changed my BP medicine from Atacand 16 mg (Candesartan) to Exforge 5/160 (Amlodipine+Valsartan). The blood test was normal prior to this. Again did this blood test now because felt mild itching all over body often without rashes. Now having more bloating and stomach cramps and bowel habit has changed to a more lose stool almost 3 times a day. Almost 6 years back once treated for IBS but thereafter remaining without symptoms almost 99% of the time. Kindly let me know the steps I need to take now. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, the itching that you are describing can go together with the elevated bilirubin levels that you are describing. The changes in your bowel habits that have been occurring with these other symptoms may point to a problem with your gallbladder or liver. I would recommend going to your primary care doctor to obtain liver enzyme lab results which will give more information, detailing the time course of all these problems (3 months, or longer?) and whether or not the cramping is associated with eating. The next step would be to obtain imaging, starting by a CT scan of the abdomen with and without contrast to make sure that there is no anatomical abnormality going on that could explain these symptoms.
